The process of vision is very simple – light enters our pupils and our lenses, located behind each pupil, catch the incoming light and focus it onto the retinas at the back of the eyes. But life can take a toll on this simple functioning. Cataracts and macular degeneration can be the result.

Cataracts are formed when protein fibers contained in the lens of the eye change shape and clump together creating a cloudy effect on the lens. Cataracts can appear milky-white, but some cases cause the lens to turn yellow or brown color. Typically, cataracts sufferers experience cloudy or blurred vision along with other possible symptoms that include worsening night vision, fading color, and a halo effect around bright lights. Surgery is mainstream medicine’s approach to clearing up cataracts and restoring good vision.

It is assumed that cataracts generate from free radical damage caused by habits like cigarette smoking or harmful ultraviolet rays as well as from previous eye surgery, traumatic injury, or extensive use of corticosteroids. A diet lacking much fresh fruit and vegetables is also a culprit.
