When I was in high school, an algebra teacher had a favorite saying for confused explanations of assignment mistakes: “A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing.” This applies perfectly to the common misunderstanding of apricot pits, bitter almonds, and even apple seeds. To put it simply, “don’t listen to Laetrile disinformation”.

Many think they are poisonous and should be shunned. Why? Cyanide is in them. All you have to do is Google cyanide alongside any of the foods mentioned above and you’ll get a plethora of articles that all support the cyanide dangers from those seeds and nuts. So maybe they’re right, right? Wrong.
Free cyanide kills. But if it’s bound in other elements of a particular compound, it’s not harmful. Some of the little bit of knowledge ilk say that your body quickly detoxes the compounds containing cyanide. Others say that you will get free cyanide when your body metabolizes those compounds. Most concede that it would take a heck of a lot of pits, seeds, or bitter almonds to poison you.

But “a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.” In this case the fear of fruit seeds and bitter almonds and other nuts is based on incomplete data. The compound containing cyanide is amygdalin.
